Writing is like magic because they both transform! Metaphor is the most obvious demonstration of this type of magic.
In this seminar you will hear a lecture about the use of controlling metaphor in the work of Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison and Colson Whitehead. Then looking at your own work (fiction, memoir, screenplays and poetry) we will discuss the role of the conscious and unconscious mind in creating a controlling metaphor that inspires theme, content and even title, or, instead, using the theme to determine the controlling metaphor. Finally, we will explore the magic inherent in metaphor itself.
